Swetha Bhagwat

I am a Stephen Hawking Fellow at the University of Birmingham, in UK.

I study fundamental physics and astrophysics that can be explored using gravitational wave observations. I am particularly interested in black holes, and my research primarily involves gravitational waves emitted when two black holes collide.

I spend my spare time exploring art — I love to paint, explore art galleries and photograph sculptures. I am also looking for opportunities to collaborate with artists and art-entusiasts to explore projects at the interface of art and science. Please feel free to write to me if you would like to brainstorm with me on this (or anything else).

Research Interests
  • Understanding the nature of black holes
  • Testing the general theory of relativity
  • Probing strong field gravity
  • Developing gravitational wave data analysis for current and future detectors
  • Testing for exotic compact objects and black hole mimickers.

Outreach

I serve as the chief coordinator for Astronomy in the City since 2022, an initiative of the University of Birmingham's observatory. This program runs twice each semester and attracts approximately 200 participants from the Birmingham area and surrounding communities. Apart fromt this, I have also led and designed a 15 week citizen astronomy course module online within the open science collective organisation called ‘One Sky’ Summer of 2022, and we are continuously making improvements and enhancements to the program. The videos of the session are available on the website. We will soon be launching one sky virtual astronomy camp. Updates coming soon at —
